Photography Contest: Mid-Century Modern in Moses Lake

Location: Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Balsam

Moses Lake boomed in the mid-1900’s. Our population went from 326 in 1940 to 11,299 in 1960! Mid-century modern architecture is all over our community. Known for clean lines, minimal decoration, and connection with nature, mid-century modern architecture is an American classic that kicked off after World War II. Mid-century modern buildings are characterized by very wide, low footprints with large, open spaces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and an emphasis on bringing the outdoors in. Mid-century signage is characterized by curvilinear, geometric shapes, and bold use of glass, steel and neon. Signs from this era were also characterized by Space Age designs symbolic of motion, such as boomerangs, flying saucers, diagrammatic atoms and parabolas, and free-form designs such as "soft" parallelograms and an artist's palette motif. Take a look around town and you will see lots of inspiration! Please enter an original photograph of mid-century architecture, signs, or other built environment features constructed in Moses Lake between 1945 – 1969.
