Creepy, Cool & Creative Scarecrow Contest

Saturday, October 28

Ages: The contest is open to all ages, individuals, families, clubs, groups & businesses. Each person, family or group may only enter one time.

Help! The Museum’s harvest patch has been overrun by hungry crows! Can you help scare them away by creating a creepy, cool or creative scarecrow?

For thousands of years humans have used scarecrows to save their crops from crows and other hungry mouths, and as an outlet for human creativity. Japanese farmers made scarecrows called kakashis, often holding bows and arrows to make them look more threatening. In medieval Britain, young boys and girls worked as live scarecrows or “bird scarers.” In the United States, immigrant German farmers made human looking scarecrows called “bootzamon,” which later changed to bogeyman. Today some farmers use technological scarecrows like reflective film ribbons to deter pests.

Visit the Museum during the week of Halloween to vote for the People’s Choice Award and take a picture with your favorite bogeyman. Prize winners will be announced Saturday, November 4.
